Anti-Phishing Features
One technique that online criminals use to steal people's personal information is to create a
phishing site, which looks just like a legitimate site where people commonly enter fi nancial
and personal information. People unwittingly enter their usernames and passwords into
the fake site, and then the criminals take that information and use it to log into the real site
and steal identities or money.
Most web browsers have an anti-phishing feature that references a central database of
known phishing sites and warns you if you display a page that is known to be fraudulent.
Internet Street-Smarts
Everyone would like to think that they aren't susceptible to fraud. Sometimes the best
frauds seem so realistic that you may easily fall for them. Here are some common lures:
An email purporting to be from a trusted service such as your bank
A pop-up advertisement that appears to be from your favorite online retailer
An address that is very similar to one you visit often, such that you don't notice it's
slightly misspelled when you click the link
ActiveX and Java
ActiveX is a Microsoft technology that uses the Microsoft .NET programming framework.
It enables a web browser to interact with the underlying operating system in order to run
mini-applications called ActiveX controls that do more sophisticated things than a plain
web page can do.
