Pruning the First Spurs
THIRD YEAR
In the third year the vines are continuing to consolidate root growth, and you are finally
going for a small crop of grapes. You also want to continue to develop strong cordons on
most of the vines and develop spurs on as many cordons as you can. The objective this year
will be to build about 10 to 15 strong, well-spaced spurs on the cordon. The spacing began
to be established last year, so you will try to add any additional spurs needed to fill in with
shoots (now canes) from last year's spurs.
Training
Sometime around March or April, you will again see the buds begin to push out as they
did in the second year. Follow the same training process with growing shoots as you did
