Watch for and clip off suckers that come up from the base of the trunk or emerge from
under the soil level.
Pruning
Prune the vines in late winter, as before. The shoots that you selected during the grow-
ing season will now be canes. Prune the canes off to two buds (or nodes). These are your
new spurs.
Move the positioning wires down closer to the fruiting wire so that you can train the
canes as they start to grow in spring.
Barklike wood on the trunk and the cordons is a sign of maturity in the grapev-
ine. Don't let your vines bear grapes until the wood starts to develop some of this
bark.
