MONARCH'S WAY
The Monarch's Way is based on the route taken by Charles II after his defeat at the
Battle of Worcester in 1651. Beginning in Worcester, the way travels a meandering
course to Shoreham, in Sussex, a route of 609 miles (980km). A three-volume guide
to the walk has been written by Trevor Antill and is published by Meridian Topics.
After a few paces a marker post directs you half-right, then along the
left-hand side of a field. Through a gap in some bushes, pass to the left of
a derelict stone barn, and find a kissing gate in a corner. Now walk along
the right headland of two fields, keeping parallel with Highfield Lane. At
the end of the second field come to a track known as Bath Lane and bear
left along it. As far as the Kilcott Valley (Section 4) the route is now shared
with that of the Monarch's Way . Keep on Bath Lane to its end (about a
mile (1½km)), with the tall Somerset Monument glimpsed ahead.
