Chapter 9
Semantic Modeling Procedures
In the previous chapter, we set the scene for semantic
modeling. We will now describe the detailed procedures for
this modeling, basing ourselves on a case study. The data
models used in this chapter are taken, unless otherwise
stated, from documents from the MDM Alliance Group
(MAG) 1 . All models respect the UML standard notation.
These procedures benefit from the Praxeme method, made
available free of charge by the Praxeme Institute . The
semantic modeling procedures form a tool box destined for
business users as well as for the IT department. The
organization required to profit from this has already been
discussed in Chapter 7.
9.1. A practical case of semantic modeling: the address
To facilitate our understanding of the process of semantic
modeling, let us take a practical case: formatting of
addresses. The business object “address” is sufficiently
universal to avoid a functional description phase. This object
is also sufficiently complex, notably when addresses have to
