6.6.1. Facets
A facet expresses a constraint which relates to the format
of a data element. If the format is not respected at the time
of data entry, for example the omission of an email address
domain, the MDM system refuses the update.
A facet can also express a constraint relative to a certain
behavior of the data. In particular, while dealing with a list
of data, it is often necessary to take into account a minimum
and maximum number of occurrences. For example, an
employee can have a minimum of two skills and a maximum
of five. The MDM user can not go outside these limits: he
must choose no less than 2 and no more than five skills for
each employee. The MDM system manages the values in
these limits as master data elements and automatically
ensures compliance at the moment of data update.
In fact, these facets are described in the data model itself.
An MDM system is able to execute them, automatically,
without bespoke developments. The reliability of the data
repository is thus strengthened because it is aligned with the
data model which holds these facets.
Because these limit values are also master data, it is
possible to update them differently according to the versions
and the use contexts. In this way it is possible to configure
the data in such a way that the minimum limit is equal to
two skills for the subsidiaries and three for head office.
At the time of entering the skill, according to whether the
data entry is in the context of a subsidiary or head office, the
validation carried out by the facet is automatically adapted.
The facet applies the minimum and maximum limits in
relation to the context.
