years. At a conservative estimate, each year of the
fighting in Europe brought on average about
seven million deaths. The significance of Turing's
contribution is in preventing the death of further
14 to 21million people that might have died if

Picasso (1881-1973). The poem was set to music
by Joseph Kosma and then sung by a prominent
French vocalist Yves Montand in 1962. Below
are short excerpts of this verse.
On a very round plate of real porcelain
an apple poses
face to face with it
a painter of reality
vainly tries to paint
the apple as it is
but the apple won't allow it
the apple disguises itself as a beautiful fruit in
disguise
and it's then
that the painter of reality
begins to realize
that all the appearances of the apple are against
him
then suddenly finds himself the sad prey
of a numberless crowd of associations of ideas
and the dazed painter loses sight of his model
and falls asleep
What an idea to paint an apple
says Picasso
and Picasso eats the apple
and the apple tells him Thanks
Drawing an Apple
The project 'Drawing an apple' is intended to
cause that when we have a joyful, good feeling
while looking at an object, which would really
mean something for us, we can convey this feeling
to our friends by sending a simple drawing with
a short text or posting it online. The first task is
to focus on our own ability to look and see, for
example, to convey one's personal perception of
the fruit and everything it could mean. There is a
scene in a South Korean Chang-dong Lee's film
“Poetry” (awarded the best screenplay prize at the
2010 Cannes International Film Festival) where
an instructor of a poetry course in a city cultural
center tells the participants they probably looked
at an apple thousands of times but they did never
see an apple yet, so they have to learn to see first,
and then they will be able to write to write a short
poem, by searching memories and emotions for
inspiration. “Up till now, you haven't seen an apple
for real” the teacher says. “To really know what
an apple is, to be interested in it, to understand it,
that is really seeing it.”
When one aims at grasping the essence of
the apple in one's drawing, apples painted by
Cezanne may come to mind, for example http://

Many years ago a French poet and screen-
writer Jacques Prévert (1900-1977) wrote a verse,
“Picasso's Promenade” - a collection of apple
related connotations and addressed it to Pablo
Here are short fragments of the French text (Pa-
roles - Gallimard - 1949):
Le Peintre La Pomme & Picasso
Sur une assiette bien ronde en porcelaine réelle
une pomme pose
Face à face avec elle
un peintre de la réalité
essaie vainement de peindre
la pomme telle qu'elle est
