A variety of techniques have been developed allowing the fabrication of
VNP structures including 1D bundles and wires, 2D films, and multi-layered
arrays leading toward 3D structures. VNPs can be immobilized on nearly
any material and complex structures can be assembled. Once assembled,
the VNPs can serve as platforms for further functionalization. Alternatively,
VNPs displaying functional moieties can be immobilized and assembled
into devices. The potential applications are open-ended and range from
data storage and battery electrodes to bioimaging and diagnostics.
