Taxi
Taxis are frequent and relatively expensive. The official rate for licensed cabs
is 40Kč flag fall plus 28Kč per kilometre and 6Kč per minute while waiting. On
this basis, any trip within the city centre - say, from Wenceslas Square to
Malá Strana - should cost about 170Kč. A trip to the suburbs, depending on
the distance, should be around 200Kč to 400Kč, and to the airport between
500Kč and 700Kč.
While the number of dishonest drivers has fallen in recent years, taxi rip-
offs are still an occasional problem, especially among drivers who congregate
in popular tourist areas like Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. The
usual tactic is to quote an inflated fare in advance and then refuse to budge
when you complain that it seems high. Avoid unmarked cabs, ie those that
aren't obviously part of a reputable firm.
Instead of hailing cabs off the street, call a radio taxi, as they're better regu-
lated and more responsible. From our experience the following companies
have honest drivers and offer 24-hour service and English-speaking operat-
