HOTEL HUBERTUS €€
( 519 352 537; www.hotelhubertus.cz ; Zámek 1, Valtice; s/d incl breakfast 1300/1600K;
) Valtice's most unusual lodging option is to sleep in the chateau itself. While
the facilities are not quite as bedazzling as the website might indicate, and there is a
slight whiff of neglect about the place, the setting is amazing and the price affordable.
The rooms are plainly furnished, in stark contrast to the opulence of the rest of chat-
eau.
PENSION
PENSION KLARET €
( 733 348 305; www.pensionklaret.cz ; Střelecká 106, Valtice; s/d incl breakfast 1040/
1480Kč; ) This pristine modern pension is set amid grassy lawns and has 12
rooms and two larger apartments. The cosy, brick-lined wine cellar is slightly less
modern; it dates back to 1890.
Znojmo
Explore
The bustling border town of Znojmo is one of southern Moravia's most popular day
trips, particularly for travellers from neighbouring Austria. People come for the wine
and to stroll the town's village-like alleys, linking intimate plazas with bustling main
squares. Znojmo lies midway between Prague and Vienna and could easily be covered
in a few hours as a stopover en route. Alternatively, there are some very nice small
hotels and pensions here, and Znojmo could easily serve as a base for exploring the
entire southern Moravian wine region. The tourist information office has a wealth of
brochures on hiking, biking and drinking possibilities. Time your visit for September
to catch the town in full riot for the annual Znojmo Wine Festival.
