Mariánské Lázně
Explore
Mariánské Lázně (mari-
ahn
-skay
lahz
-nyeh; known internationally as Marienbad) is
smaller, less urban and arguably prettier than Karlovy Vary, making it feel more like a
classic spa destination (but also meaning there's even less to do in the evening). In the
resort's heyday, Mariánské Lázně drew such luminaries as Goethe, Thomas Edison,
Britain's King Edward VII and even American author Mark Twain. These days many
visitors are day-trippers from Germany, hauled in by coach to stroll the gardens and
colonnades before repairing to a cafe for the inevitable
apfelstrudel
then the ride back
home. Beside the colonnades, the town is ringed by deep forests that make for great
walks.
