HIKING THE HILLS OF KARLOVY VARY

Once you've wearied of walking around town and taking the waters, a scenic
network of trails lies in the hills waiting for exploration. One of the most popular
trails ascends 1.5km from the Grandhotel Pupp to the hilltop Diana Lookout

Dec) . The woods on the way to the lookout are peppered with monuments, in-
cluding one to that crusty old bourgeois, Karl Marx, who visited Karlsbad (Kar-
lovy Vary) three times between 1874 and 1876.

Alternatively, you can ride a funicular railway ( www.karlovy-vary.cz/en/
diana-tower ; one way/return 40/70Kc; 9am-7pm Jun-Sep, 9am-6pm Apr, May & Oct,
9am-5pm Feb, Mar, Nov & Dec) from behind Grandhotel Pupp. The trip to Diana takes
five minutes. Stag's Leap (Jelení skok), the promontory from where legend has
it that Charles IV, or rather his dogs, first discovered the town's healing waters,
is 500m northeast from an intermediate stop on the funicular. Another lookout
tower is on Vyhlídka Karla IV , south of Grandhotel Pupp.

If you're feeling energetic, it's a 17km hike on a blue-marked trail via the Di-
ana lookout and along the Ohřě Rever to the romantic castle and village of
Loket nad Ohřě (see boxed text CLICK HERE ).
