WORTH A DETOUR: THE 'ELBOW' OF LOKET NAD OHŘĚ
Surrounded by a wickedly serpentine loop in the Ohřě River, the picturesque vil-
lage of
Loket
may as well be on an island. According to the local tourist office, it
was Goethe's favourite town and, after a lazily subdued stroll around the gor-
geous main square and castle, it may be yours as well.
Loket's German name is
Elbogen
(meaning 'elbow', after the extreme bend in
the river) ‒ a name synonymous with the manufacturing of porcelain since 1815.
Shops in town have a fine selection of the local craftsmanship. The neighbouring
towns of Horní Slavkov (Schlackenwald) and Chodov (Chodan) also make por-
celain.
Most people visit Loket as a day trip from Karlovy Vary, but it's also a sleepy
place to ease off the travel accelerator for a few days, especially when the day-
trippers have departed. Loket also makes a good base for visiting Karlovy Vary:
the bus to/from Karlovy Vary stops across the bridge from the Old Town. Walk
across the bridge to reach the castle, accommodation and
Infocentrum
(Loket In-
formation Centre;
10.30am-12.30pm &
1-5pm)
, which has internet access (per 15 minutes 10Kč).
The main site in town is the beautiful castle,
Hrad Loket
(Loket Castle ; 352
lish text 95/75Kč; 9am-4.30pm Apr-Oct, 9am-3.30pm Nov-Mar)
. It was built on the site
of an earlier Romanesque fort, of which the only surviving bits are the tall,
square tower and fragments of a rotunda and palace.
