In-Depth Information
Across the road is the
Market Colonnade
(Tržní kolonáda; 1883) with its del-
icate white woodwork: one of its two springs, pramen Karla IV, is the spa's old-
est. Behind this is the
Castle Colonnade
(Zámecká kolonáda) and a castle
tower, the
Zámecká věž
, erected in place of Charles IV's hunting lodge after it
was destroyed by fire in 1604.
The street Stará Louka continues south for more splendour. At the end of the
choicest hotel and still housing well-heeled guests for the night.
Eating & Drinking
Food prices, especially around the colonnades, will seem high unless you've arrived
from Prague. And check your bill: 'mistakes' happen. You can buy
oplatky
(wafers;
see boxed text) across town.
CZZECCH
HOSPODA U ŠVEJKA €€
great choice for lunch or dinner, right in the heart of the spa centre. Though the
presentation borders on extreme kitsch, the food is actually very good and the atmo-
sphere not unlike a classic Czech pub.
CZZECCH
EMBASSY RESTAURANT €€€
dining room is richly atmospheric and the food, mostly Czech standards like roast
pork or duck, is top notch. There's an excellent wine list, and in nice weather they
sometimes offer outdoor seating.
