Turn right into Pohořelec - a little alley at No 9 leads into the courtyard of
Strahov Monastery , where you can visit the library before going through the
gate at the eastern end of the courtyard into the gardens above Malá Strana.
Turn right on the footpath here (signposted 'Rozhledna & Bludiště') and finish
with a pleasant stroll along to the Petřín Lookout Tower .

EATING
Most of the restaurants in the castle district are aimed squarely at the tourist
crowds, and the whole area becomes pretty quiet in the evenings after the castle
closes. The following places, which are a cut above the usual tourist eateries re-
garding character and cuisine, are worth seeking out.

( 233 312 925; Jiřská 3; mains 200-300Kč; 10am-6pm; ; 22) This cafe,
housed in the 16th-century Lobkowicz Palace, is the best eatery in the castle complex
by an imperial mile. Try to grab one of the tables on the balconies at the back - the
view over Malá Strana is superb, as is the goulash. The coffee is good, too, and ser-
vice is fast and friendly.

serving Bohemian fish, fowl and game dishes (tripe fricassee is a speciality) and fre-
quented by locals and visiting dignitaries as well as tourists (the Czech foreign min-
istry is just up the road, and Margaret Thatcher once dined here). In summer get a
table in its leafy zahradní restaurace (garden restaurant) across the street.
