Art Nouveau
As the 19th century drew to a close, Czech architects began to tire of linear neoclas-
sical facades and the pompous style of imperial Vienna. They were looking for
something new and found inspiration in Paris with art nouveau and its emphasis on
beauty.
The city's finest expression of art nouveau is the magnificent Municipal House
(1906-12). Every aspect of the building's decoration was designed by leading Czech
artists of the time, most famously Alfons Mucha, who decorated the Lord Mayor's
Hall.
