In-Depth Information
Oxford Street gets insanely busy at weekends and during summer, with a smattering of
pickpockets and scam artists trying to work the crowd. If you're shopping here it's quietest
on midweek mornings.
Essential Experiences
Oxford Street is perhaps London's most famous street, an exhaust fume
choking strip of shop filled tarmac that runs all the way through Mayfair. It's
England's premier high street shopping experiences and many huge interna-
tional chains have their flagship stalls along here. All the adjacent streets are
similarly chocker full of shops.
While you're on Oxford Street it's impossible to miss Selfridges , London's
gargantuan luxury department store. For all the chain stores inside, there's
enough small scale boutique to break the monotony.
Wander down Bond Street and check out the boutique elegance of its luxury
stores, with everything from diamonds to underwear on sale at a big price.
For famous bespoke suits head over to Saville Row and join the long list of
celebrities getting measured up.
Rest your feet from the shopping by hanging out in Hyde Park , the city's
biggest thriving with ebullience on warm summer days. Bring a few beers
on a weekday summer evening or just bring a picnic and find a quiet spot to
recover from London's intensity.
Mayfair is where you'll find long-running London institutions like Madame
Tussauds ( www. madametussauds .com/ london / ) and the ode to fictional
crime solving, The Sherlock Holmes Museum ( www. sher-
lock - holmes .co.uk ) . Both are pricy and prone to queues during the summer,
although some people will struggle to resist the temptation of having a peek
inside. Tickets are cheaper when booked online. Both are next to Baker
Street Underground Station.
£FREE - Explore the trinkets and narratives of the British Museum , each
room revealing life and death from the last few millennia. You'll find an
Egyptian mummy, regal crowns, prized possessions from late kings, hunting
