The major layers for the data aspect and the identification of business
owners of that data include

Enterprise data scope.
This is a broad view of the information required
by the enterprise. This information is modeled from a subject data
area or view level, and their relationships with enterprise functions
are mapped.

Business data information.
This is data modeled for a particular seg-
ment or function of the enterprise — a model of business entities that
represent facts about people, places, things, events, and concepts for
a specific business segment.
•
Business system design information.
This is a detailed data analysis to
support a business system or a business segment of a particular area
without regard to the particular target computing environment.
•
Technology design information.
This is data derived from business sys-
tem design information identified and tailored to the physical target
computing environment and database management system.
•
Database design information.
This is data required to define physical
data structures for the storage of data elements in a data store based
on the technology design information.
•
Data ownership.
This is business accountability for the management of
data as a vital corporate asset. The data owner is responsible for creat-
ing the logical model for the data, ensuring that the business views of
the creating and using processes are supported, certifying the optimal
source, and educating end users as to the data's business meaning. Data
owners are supported by the information systems service providers.
EDM COMPONENTS
To manage the many and complex aspects of providing a total solution
to data management and data warehousing, the following EDM compo-
nents are identified:

Enterprise warehouse.
This provides a logical data store to contain en-
terprise managed data.
•
Enterprise data warehouse.
This provides a physical data store to con-
tain the master data elements.
•
Client data warehouse.
This provides a downstream physical data
store to contain distributed data.
•
Business information directory.
This provides a managed repository to
contain metadata.
•
Optimum source.
This identifies the primary source to propagate qual-
ity operational data.
