Much attention has been given to the requirements and processes of
identifying and developing data relationships. Publications by IBM regard-
ing information systems planning and the information warehouse; by John
Zachman regarding the data architecture framework; by William Inmon
regarding the data warehouse and structures; and by James Martin regard-
ing information engineering all establish approaches to identify and estab-
lish critical aspects of managing information (see Exhibit 1).
It is the intention of this chapter to emphasize the need for the top layer of
data areas to be identified by the business. Subsequent and parallel efforts
can take place as supported by the corporation to understand and take
