San Marcos Inside the Ingenio San Marcos museum. Excellent restaurant with glass tables
mounted on restored pieces of nineteenth-century industrial machinery and an inventive
menu featuring llama carpaccio, ceviche and garlic prawns; the rainbow trout and salmon
dishes are well worth trying too. You can also have a look round the museum while you're
here. Mains Bs25-65. Daily for lunch and dinner.
Sumaj Orcko Quijjaro 46. Inexpensive restaurant-bar serving large portions of hearty local
cuisine and good-value set almuerzos. Regional specialities include picante de viscacha - a
large Andean rabbit-like animal cooked in a spicy sauce - and perdiz - a partridge-like game

CAFÉS
Café 4.060 Hoyos 1. This contemporary café-bar has a slick, low-lit interior and an array
of drinks: the coffee (Bs7-27) is organic and has been grown at an altitude exceeding 4060m
in the Yungas, and there's a lengthy cocktail, wine and beer list. The food (mains Bs25-76)
is good quality, but a little pricey. Mon-Sat 4pm-midnight.
Café La Plata Plaza 10 de Noviembre. Slick café-bar overlooking the plaza with good cof-
fees (Bs7-20), cakes and pastries (including churros ) for the daytime, as well as beer (from
Bs12) and wine in the evening. There's a rack of magazines and numerous board games to
keep you occupied. Mon 1.30-11pm, Tues-Sat 10.30am-11pm.
Chaplin MatosandQuijjaro. Friendlyplace attracting ayounglocal crowdwithawiderange
of inexpensive snacks (Bs5-20), including burgers and empanadas , plus juices and decent
coffee. Daily except Sun.
Cherry's Salón de Té Padilla 8. Appealing tearoom with orange walls, faux wrought iron
furnishings and plastic flowers. The economical menu features breakfasts (Bs12-18), sand-
wiches and burgers (Bs6-13), cakes (Bs3.50-6) and ice cream sundaes (Bs15-16), as well as
a few more substantial meals. Daily.
Koala Café Ayacucho 5. Mellow travellers' café opposite the Casa Real de la Moneda
serving a mix of local and international dishes; if you're hungry, try the five-course set lunch/
dinner (Bs40). The walls are covered with travel articles about Bolivia, and there's 15min
free internet access for every diner.
