Indonesian gado gado ,arobustmixoftofuandvegetables inpeanutsauce.Ifyou'rejusthere
for a drink, there's a handsome selection to choose from, including offerings from Bolivia's
domestic microbreweries; if it's in stock, don't miss the Hoegaarden-esque Chala from Ted's
Cervecería. Likewise don't miss the annual riot of orange wigs that is the Queens Day party

Thelonious Jazz Bar Av20deOctubre2172; map . Venerable jazzvenuewithanintimate
basement atmosphere, hosting excellent live jazz, Brazilian music and occasional Gypsy
swing Wed-Sat. The cover charge (Wed & Thurs Bs20, Fri & Sat Bs25; no charge Mon &
Tues) is tacked onto the end of your drinks bill rather than paid upfront, but is usually worth
every centavo. The only downside is how chokingly smoky the place gets later in the even-
ing; resign yourself to a morning-after laundry run. Mon-Sat 7pm-3.30am.
Traffic Av Arce 2549 02 2118107; map . Garishly designed bar-cum-restaurant-cum-club,
with a chandelier-lit, brick-arched dining area, though it's more famous for its Fri/Sat night
roster of big-name national - and occasionally international - DJs. Mon-Sat noon-2pm &
6pm-4am.
TTkos Mexico 1555 7011 5660; map . Hot, dark, sweaty and often packed subterranean

ENTERTAINMENT
Appreciation of the performing arts in La Paz is limited to a small minority, but there are
a few places where you can catch theatre, classical music concerts, ballet and even opera.
Film is more popular, and though the emphasis tends to be onHollywood action blockbusters
(almost always in English with Spanish subtitles), La Paz, surprisingly perhaps, has two ex-
cellent art house cinemas . You can pick up Jiwaki , a free, pocket-sized monthly guide to
public museums, galleries, cinema and theatre, at the artier cafés and bars, or check out the
listings on municipal website, lapaz.bo . The English-language Bolivian Express ( bolivi-
anexpress.org ) also has culture listings.
