Hiking:
Hiking around The Cinque Terre is a definite must for those who are avid hiking enthusi-
asts. The scenery alone is enough to make even those not typically interesting in hiking a
reason to take it up. And with The Cinque Terre boasting some of the best coastline hiking
worldwide, you're sure to enjoy yourself while taking in the breathtaking scenery too.
Travel Tip: Because The Cinque Terre is prone to landslides,
it's advisable to check to see if certain hiking paths are opened or
closed before heading out for your hiking excursion. This will save
you time, as well as ensure your safety while hiking.
The trail that's located closest to the sea is known as No. 2. This trail requires you to obtain
a hiking pass, while the rest of the hiking trails do not require a pass. Two hiking paths
are available going from Manarola to Corniglia. The one closest to the ocean is easier and
takes only around thirty minutes. It's not a paved path, however. If you want to reach the
town center of Corniglia, you can choose the more uphill hike that has 385 zigzag steps.
There's also a trail from Corniglia to Vernazza that is a much longer hike with uneven ter-
rain. This trail is popular with seasoned hikers, as it takes two hours to complete. For those
who are more physically fit and are up for a challenge, the trail from Vernazza to Monter-
osso may be just what you're looking for. This trail is the steepest of the trails and has over
250 meters of climbing as well as very uneven rocks to traverse. However, the views can't
be beat as it winds its way through olive groves and vineyards while offering impressive
ocean views.
Going back to the No. 2 trail, in which you need a pass to hike on, this trail travels between
all five villages and takes the better part of a day to finish. For the more experienced hikers,
The Cinque Terre also offers more mountainous trails that are well maintained and off the
beaten path if you're looking for a quieter outing away from the tourists.
Travel Tip: If you plan on traveling to The Cinque Terre in
June, July, or August, it's ideal to start your hikes as early in the
morning as possible, as the midday sun can be unforgiving and
very hot.
