Each village of The Cinque Terre offers some type of swimming possibility. Monterosso
has two large sandy beach areas, perfect for sunbathing and cooling off in the sparkling
blue sea. Since this is the largest town, however, these beaches may tend to be overrun
with tourists and locals alike in the hot summer months. There are some beautiful pebble
beaches along the coastline of Riomaggiore and Corniglia if you're looking for something
a little different from the everyday sandy beach variety. Lastly, the harbor of Vernazza also
has a small sandy beach suitable for taking a dip in.
Travel Tip: If you're in search of the quietest place to take a
relaxing swim, go for the beach at Corniglia. It can be reached by
taking a long staircase leading down to the sea, thus lending itself
to be a quieter spot due to tourists not wanting to climb back up the
staircase.
Where to Eat:
Since the landscape of The Cinque Terre is covered with olive trees and vineyards, it only
seems fitting that wine and olive oils are a must in the cuisine here. If you're a fan of fish,
this is also the perfect place for you to visit and dine in as there are many specialty fish
dishes, as well as other delightful foods that are sure to tempt your taste buds.
Food in The Cinque Terre is prepared with respect to the processes and flavors used centur-
ies ago. If pasta is your thing, be sure to try the Trofie, which is pasta made from chestnut
or wheat flour and is traditionally, topped with a pesto sauce made from fresh basil leaves,
extra virgin olive oil, pine nuts, marjoram, and grated cheeses. Another local pasta spe-
cialty is Tagliatelle, handmade pasta that is used with a sauce that typically has cabbage,
potatoes, beans, mushrooms, and chickpeas.

pies and rice pies. The vegetable pies tend to be prepared with locally grown herbs includ-

with a rich egg and ricotta cheese mixture as well as parmesan cheese and baked.
Fish choice may include sardines, anchovies, calamari, cuttlefish, and also octopus. Mus-

There is also a local bread similar to focaccia called Farinata that's made from chickpea
