Structurally STXs are divided into two series, saxitoxins and neosaxitoxins. The difference in
between the two is that in the latter a hydroxyl group is added at N-1 position. In each of these
series the structural variants are synthesized by the presence and differential stereochemistry of
sulphate groups at C-1 and the occurrence of N-sulphate carbamoyl groups at C-17. The diversity
of PSTs produced by L . wollei appears to be greater than in any of the PST-producing cyanobacterial
