On the corner of Voetboogstraat and Heiligeweg you will see a white arch on your right.
These are the remains of an old prison where prisoners were held in basement cells which
were below the tidal level of the sea (and Amsterdam canal water level). When the tide
came in, the prisoners were forced to manually pump out the water in order to survive.
