National Monument
Standing in the middle of Dam Square is the 22-meter high National Monument. The
monument is regarded as an important symbolic reminder of WWII.
The Netherlands was invaded by Nazi Germany and the thousands of Jews who fled to the
Netherlands for safety were captured and sent to concentration camps, for many that meant
death. The monument was unveiled in 1956 and plays a central role in national Remem-
brance Day ceremonies.
