The Trans-Mongolian Railway line serves as a life-sustaining artery for this small, other-
wise insignificant village in the Gobi Desert. Most of the town's activity can be found
around the square in front of the train station. The chief attractions here are the disused
water fountain, some outdoor pool tables and grabbing a bite at one of the many eateries
that cater to transit travellers killing time.

Zamyn Uud Hotel HOTEL$$$
( 7052 7032; tw T35,000) Located at the north end of the train-station platform, this half-
decent hotel has smart rooms with kettle, wall-mounted TV and clean attached bathroom,
and is the best choice in town. You'll find cheaper, grubbier options opposite the station.
Eating
Outside the train station, you'll find a bunch of cheap restaurants and small supermar-
kets.
Khan Buuz MONGOLIAN$
(mains T4500-5500; 24hr) On the train station platform is this branch of the dependable
canteen chain. No English menu, but some photos to point at. Does buuz , as well as
tsuivan , various soups, khuushuur and warming mugs of suutei tsai (salty milk tea).
Information
The train station's new ticket office is on the platform and contains several ATMs that ac-
cept international cards. Moneychangers are on hand outside the station to change your
tögrög or Chinese rénmíbì. Luggage storage is also available for T150 per item in the
basement of the ticket office. Train tickets are bought on the 2nd floor.
