Ikh Nartiin Chuluu
The Ikh Nartiin Chuluu Nature Reserve (Ikh Nart; www.ikhnart.com ) is seeing an increas-
ing trickle of visitors thanks to its accessibility from Ulaanbaatar, improving tourist facil-
ities and a healthy population of the globally threatened argali sheep. A team of interna-
tional biologists have been conducting a long-term study that has partly habituated the
sheep to the presence of humans, so you're almost guaranteed to see an argali here. In re-
cent years the Argali Project has expanded to include the ibex and been joined by the
Carnivore Project and the Vulture Project.
Several ancient burial mounds (GPS: N 45°75.546', E 108°65.454') and petroglyphs (GPS:
N 45°60.787', E 108°57.201'; N 45°60.237', E 108°55.959'; N 45°59.175', E 108°61.397') can also be
found throughout the park. The petroglyphs are found on rocky outcrops and take the
form of Buddhist prayers written in Tibetan script.
Some locals consider the natural springs near Khalzan Uul (Bald Mountain) a cure
for everything from hangovers to HIV.

the GPS coordinates, local knowledge is invaluable when picking a route through the
rocky formations) to collect you at either Shiveegobi, Tsomog or Choir train stations.
Transport to and from the train stations is included in the package, as are guided tours of
the reserve.
