Appropriately enough for the region that spawned a horseback warlord, parts of this
lush land are best explored on the back of a horse. It's named for the Khentii Nuruu
(Khentii Mountain Range) that's part of the giant 1.2-million-hectare Khan Khentii
Strictly Protected Area, which is mostly in Töv aimag (

Chinggis Khot (Öndörkhaan)

A centre of relative sophistication in the middle of barren plains, the aimag capital of Ch-
inggis Khot (Chinggis City), previously known as Öndörkhaan (Supreme Emperor), was
renamed in 2013 in honour of Chinggis Khan. It is a welcome sight, with its tree-lined
streets, scattered Chinggis Khaan monuments and a small collection of well-preserved
18th-century buildings. It sits on the northern bank of the Kherlen Gol, which provides a
fishing hole for locals and riverside camping spots for travellers, though during Naadam
these get way too busy. Chinggis Khot celebrates Naadam in late July rather than on 11
July.
