( 9810 0077; Beatles Sq; dishes T9200-14,000; 11.30am-9pm) Run by a Mongolian wo-
man who lived in Fukuoka, this place has an authentic Japanese blue-collar feel to it,
with a mostly bar-stool seating arrangement. Several types of ramen are available: we
liked the tonkotsu ajitama (tonkotsu broth with a marinated egg). The soups also contain
delectable sliced meat, chopped onions and noodles. Among the side dishes, the chata-
madon (egg and rice) is highly recommended. Make sure to ask for garlic (sermis) and
they will bring you a raw clove and garlic crusher - a nice touch.

( 11-321 979; Peace Ave; items T6000-9000; 7am-10pm; ) A pit stop for inde-
pendent travellers, road-weary folk can be found here fuelling up with soups, salads and
sandwiches before heading out to the streets for more city explorations. While the food
gets mixed reviews it's hard to beat the English breakfast eaten on the sunny porch in
summer. There's a handy noticeboard for posting messages, and outside the summer sea-
son the cafe hosts a movie night every Wednesday.

( 7013 5055; Beatles Sq; mains T10,000-16,000; 11.30am-10pm) Among the numerous
Chinese-style restaurants in Ulaanbaatar, this is one of the cleanest and most welcoming.
The speciality here is steamed dumplings stuffed with chicken, pork, veggies or shrimp -
all are delicious and fresh. Glass windows allow you to peek into the kitchen to watch
how the dumplings are expertly prepared. On the downside, prices are a tad high consid-
ering the small portions.
