Popular with visiting journalists and diplomats wanting to be close to
the square, so you are paying more for the location than the quality of the rooms. Rooms
that face the road can be a tad noisy but side-facing rooms have no view, so pick your
poison. On the plus side, it has courteous and accommodating staff and a pretty good in-
house Indian restaurant.

The Ulaanbaatar Hotel is the grand old dame of Mongolia. Opened in 1961,
this was where Soviet dignitaries stayed during their visits to the 'Red Hero'. It still car-
ries an air of the Khrushchev era with its high ceilings, chandeliers, marble staircase and
lavish ballroom. Rooms are well appointed but some are a bit small. Despite being con-
sidered a top-end hotel you might experience some imperfections here: fickle air-con,
poor service, spotty hot water, unreliable wi-fi, and other minor inconveniences. Con-
sider it part of the adventure. The hotel also contains two restaurants, a coffee shop, a
travel agency, business centre and sauna.

Between Dashchoilon Khiid and Baga Toiruu, this hidden hotel offers clean and comfort-
able rooms. Its best feature is its large and modern bathrooms, plus the free breakfast.
The surrounding courtyard is pretty scruffy but the hotel itself is fine. You can get here
by walking through the arch on Baga Toiruu across the street from Namaste restaurant.
