tasteful and understated as the acrobatic shows next door are glitzy and vulgar. A great range
of single malts - including superb Japanese varieties - and fine attention to detail (check out
the round ice cubes) make this dark, cosy venue a hidden gem. Daily 7pm-2am.

Guomao subway (lines 1 & 10); map . With some of the most wonderful views of any Beijing
bar from its outdoor terrace, Xiu has been up there with the most popular in the city for sever-
al years, serving up good cocktails amid a stylish, yet raucous, atmosphere. There's a dance-
floor inside, though be warned that it's a notorious hunting ground for local prostitutes. Daily
6pm-late.
SOUTH OF THE CENTRE

the best place to drink in the backpacker-heavy Dazhalan area; Leo Hostel across the road
has a great bar too, but this one has the added benefit of being able to people-watch on one
of Beijing's most intriguing streets (see Dazhalan Lu and around ) . Daily 7am-late.
THE FAR NORTH

restaurant by day, beer bottles start to pop as soon as the sun dares to approach the horizon.

CLUBS
Gone are the days when everything stopped at 10pm for a raffle; Chinese clubs are pretty
slick these days, with hip-hop and house music proving enduringly popular. All places listed
here have a cover charge , quoted in our reviews, which generally increases at weekends. If
you just want to dance, and aren't too prissy about the latest music, check our bar reviews
for venues with their own dancefloor. There are several venues around ChaoyangPark , and
though a few bus routes head this way, everyone heads here by taxi - it's around ￥ 25 from
Sanlitun.
