8); map . A simple courtyard nightspot, rather hidden away from the action and all the better
for it. Lined with rugs and traditional beds, it is aimed at the horizontally inclined, so perhaps
better for a second date than a first. They also serve good tapas. Daily 2pm-2am.
Drum and Bell 鼓钟咖啡馆 , gǔzhōng kāfēiguǎn 41 Zhonglouwan Hutong 010
84033600; Guloudajie subway (lines 2 & 8); map . With welcoming staff and a great location
between the Drum and Bell towers, this little place is always crowded. The rooftop patio is
an added bonus in summer, and they serve decent thin-crust pizzas. Daily noon-2am.
EastShoreLiveJazzCafé 东岸咖啡 , dōng'àn kāfēi 2F 2 Qianhai Nanyan 010 84032131;
Beihai North subway (line 6); map . Dark, mellow jazz bar, set on the second floor with a
view of the lake and occasional live shows . Daily 3pm-2am.
Huxleys 德比酒吧 , débǐ jiǔbā 16 Yandai Xiejie 010 64027825; Beihai North or Nan-
luoguxiang subway (both line 6); map . Cheap booze, no attitude and approachable staff - a
total contrast to the places lining nearby Houhai. It's a real winner with young locals and ex-
pats alike. Daily 5pm-late.
Pass By Bar 过客酒吧 , guòkè jiǔbā 108 Nanluogu Xiang 010 84038004; Nanluoguxiang
subway (line 6); map . A renovated courtyard house turned comfortable bar/restaurant, popu-
lar with backpackers and students. There are lots of books and pictures of China's far-flung
places to peruse, and well-travelled staff to chat to - if you can get their attention. Daily
9am-4am.
Sex and da City 欲望都市 , yùwàng dūshì Lotus Lane 010 59056358; Beihai North sub-
way (line 6); map . A pick-up joint with bar-top dancing; Carrie might not approve, but Sam-
antha probably would. Daily 5pm-late.
Siif 如果 , rúguŏ 67 Beiluogu Xiang 010 64069496, siif.cn ; Andingmen subway (line
2); map . Nobody, even the staff, seems quite sure exactly what this place is called. It matters
not, however, since it's a highly friendly place with quirkily designed tables and chairs; head
on downstairs for table football, or clamber up to the roof terrace for a drink. Daily 1pm-2am.

qiao subway (line 5); map . Tiny bar that somehow manages to squeeze in over a hundred
different varieties of imported beer, plus plenty of wines and stronger stuff - what else do
you need to know? Daily 6am-late.
