Y ou can see the impact of family planning in the
Vietnam pyramid where younger age cohorts are get-
ting smaller. Population reduction programs have been
promoted in Vietnam since the 1960s. The country has
high rates of free abortions. However, contraception use
has increased from 68 percent in 1996 to 78 percent
in 2006, although rates are lower in many more tra-
