To evaluate the efficiency of the tactile display, another experiment was conducted in
which an observer touched four elastomer materials with a finger and then the linear
actuator. They then attempted to relate the real elastomers with the softness of the tactile
display. For each person the experiment was repeated for the four simulated materials, as
illustrated in Figure 11.25.
To remove the effect of visual feedback, the setup was covered so that the subjects were
not able to see the different materials. In the first experiment, four materials (ICF400,
A2, B1, and Plexiglas with Young's modulus = 1.2 GPa, were simulated by the tactile
display. The subjects touched the materials and finally decided which of the objects had
similar softness to the display. A total of 25 subjects participated in the experiment, all
of whom successfully distinguished between the simulated elastomers (Table 11.2).
