In-Depth Information
Bus
Best for… getting around residential neighbourhoods and out of the city.
A ride on a municipal bus costs ¥200; there are no transfer tickets.
The Megurin Community Bus ( www.city.taito.lg.jp/index/kurashi/kotsu/megurin/in-
dex.html ; one ride/day pass ¥100/300;
every 15 minutes, 7am-7pm) runs around Ueno and
Asakusa.
Highway buses headed to the Mt Fuji area leave from the Shinjuku Highway
Bus Terminal ( OFFLINE MAP ; 5376-2222; www.highwaybus.com/html/gp/foreign/en/ac-
cess/index.html ; 1-10-1 Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku;
6am-11.30pm;
JR Yamanote Line to Shin-
juku, west exit) . Reserve tickets online in advance.
Taxi
Best for… late nights and groups sharing the cost.
Flagfall is ¥710. After 2km the meter starts to clock an additional ¥100 for every
350m (and up to ¥100 for every two minutes you sit idly in traffic). It adds up
quickly - figure around ¥2500 for a ride from Ginza to Roppongi.
It's best to have cash on you as not all taxis take credit cards.
Look for taxi ranks in front of all major train stations and hotels.
You can also hail a cab from the street - taxis with their indicator in red are free;
green means taken.
Cabbies usually don't speak English and have trouble finding all but the most
well-known spots. Fortunately many have GPS systems, so have an address or a
business card for your destination handy.
