Kuro-mon
The Kuro-mon (Black Gate), to the west of the main gate and near the Gallery of
Hōryū-ji Treasures, was transported from the Edo-era mansion of a feudal lord.
On weekends it opens for visitors to pass through.

TŌYŌKAN GALLERIES 1 & 3
The Tōyōkan, which reopened in 2013 after a lengthy renovation, has an excellent
collection of art and artefacts from around Asia. Compare and contrast the
buddhas of Japan with those that came before in India, China and Central Asia.
Top Tips
Allow two hours to take in the highlights, a half-day to do the Honkan in depth or a
whole day to take in everything.
For a tour of the highlights, start with the 2nd floor of the Honkan.
Stow your coat and bag in the lockers just inside the entrance to the Honkan.
Be sure to pick up a copy of the brochure Highlights of Japanese Art , found in room
1-1 on the 2nd floor of the Honkan.

On the ground floor of the Tōyōkan, the Hotel Ōkura Yurinoki ( OFFLINE MAP ; meals
¥800-2500, coffee ¥550;
10.30am-4.30pm) restaurant and cafe has terrace seating and a
varied menu.
The charming teahouse Torindō ( Click here ) is a 5-minute walk northwest of the mu-
seum.
