This museum of WWII-era Tokyo gives a sense of everyday life for the common
people: how they ate, slept, dressed, studied, prepared for war and endured mar-
tial law, famine and loss of loved ones. An English audio guide (free) fills in a lot.
On the 5th floor, media consoles show film footage shot during the war. ( Shōwa-kan;

Picking up from the Meiji period, this excellent museum traces the evolution of
Japanese art following the introduction of Western-style techniques in the late
19th century through the grim, propaganda years of WWII to the mid-20th cen-
tury, when Japanese artists embraced modernism and made it their own. ( Kokuritsu

This is the Tokyo branch of Ise-jingū, Japan's mother shrine in Mie prefecture. It
was established in 1880 to allow Tokyoites to worship the deities enshrined at Ise
without having to leave the capital. Credited with establishing the Shintō wedding
ritual, Tokyo Dai-jingū is also a popular pilgrimage site for young Tokyoites hop-
ing to get hitched. (
