residence, the majority of Papal ceremonies are conducted at this location.
A great collection of statues and other artworks are housed within the confines of the
church. The Vatican Museums also stand as another location housing some of the most
renowned pieces of artwork produced during the Renaissance period. Located within the
boundaries of the Vatican City, these history-rich museums are a must-see. Michelangelo's
Sistine Chapel is on the visitor route, as is the Stanze della Segnatura, which was famously
decorated by Raphael.
With beautiful spiral stairs winding their way throughout the museum, there are a total of
54 galleries for visitors to appreciate. The Sistine Chapel is the 54th gallery along the vis-
itor's route, and is often said to be the reward for having made it through the other 53 gal-
leries.
Housing artwork from Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Perugino, Caravaggio, and also mod-
ern religious artwork from Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carra, the Vatican Museums offer
a visual feast for those who appreciate art.
