4. St Peter's Basilica and Vatican's Museums
Located within the Vatican City, St. Peter's Basilica stands as one of the most renowned ar-
chitectural works of the Renaissance, and is in fact one of the largest churches in the world.
St. Peter's Basilica boasts more than just size though, it's also held in high regard as being
one of the most holy Catholic sites in the world. It's the final resting place for Saint Peter,
whose tomb is said to be located below the basilica's altar, and it's also the final resting place
for the first Roman Bishop. A number of Popes have been interred here, due to the holy his-
tory woven through the very fibers of the basilica.
Construction was completed on November 18, 1626. Today it is a place of pilgrimage for
many Christians, and is also is often the principal church for the Pope to hold services
throughout the year. This outstanding architectural work is often mistaken for being a
