based simulation. This is demonstrated at two examples: first, an example of an ongo-
ing research project is provided. It is shown that the development of an ontology re-
fines the process of theoretical coding by providing a means to detect gaps in the data
and to specify the intended model, i.e. the scope of the domain. This facilitates the
recursive iteration between data gathering and coding. Second, at the example of the
escalation of ethno-nationalist conflicts it is shown how simulation results of an evi-
dence based model generates stylised facts. If a model based on the evidence of an
empirical case generates broad patterns that are characteristic for the field, then this
shows that a process starting with an idiographic description succeeded to generate a
theory. This can be done with the help of simulation experiments. This contributes to
a clarification to the precarious relation between a mere description and a truly
theoretical Grounded Theory.
