In-Depth Information
Number of generations or bouts of mating = 101.
Thirty replicate runs are generated for each set of input trial conditions for
the computation of comparative statistics.
There are 172 founders divided into four equally small approximate squares,
or arranged in one large one, as described below. There are always 4 grid
points between any two adjacent founders. The founders are given an
initial age of 13 so that there has been no mortality and all 172 founders
have an equal probability of contributing pollen and producing offspring
in the fi rst and successive rounds of mating, even though not all founders
will necessarily reproduce in any mating bout, and may suffer mortality
as individuals age.
With regard to the above input for basic trial a, trials differ as follows
(the following differences are illustrated in Fig. 16.4) :
In trial a, the 172 founders are divided into four groups, each group inset
diagonally from one of the corners by 80 units.
In trial b, the 172 founders are divided into four groups, each group inset
diagonally from one of the corners by 600 units.
In trial c, the 172 founders are placed in one large square at the center of
the preserve.
In trial d, the 172 founders are placed in one large square inset from the
borders of the preserve lower left corner by approximately 600 units.
Trial e was exactly like trial c except that (1) more offspring were deposited
nearer the carpellate parent and there was a longer offspring dispersal tail
and (2) all pollen dispersal distance categories were the same, except for
the most distant category, which was extended from a maximum of 300
to a maximum of 700 units (there is a more distant tail of potential pollen
contribution).
Trial f was exactly like trial d except that (1) more offspring were deposited
nearer the carpellate parent and there was a longer offspring dispersal tail
and (2) all pollen dispersal distance categories were the same, except for
the most distant category, which was extended from a maximum of 300
to a maximum of 700 units (there is a more distant tail of potential pollen
contribution).
Thus, trials a, b, c, and d had offspring dispersal distance schedules as
given above, while trials e and f had the following offspring dispersal
conditions:
