Overflow weirs are of the bellmouth type, most discharging into side ponds below. Walk-
ways are a feature of the canal and one promenade has been built upon a series of new brick
arches. These extend an existing network of arches in two planes over a side pond. Owing
to the lack of space, dividing barriers have been erected between the canal and the towpath
below some of the locks. At lock 13, on the edge of the Jewellery Quarter, is a five-storey
mural on a Mowlem office wall. It is best seen from the offside of the lock.
Farmer's Bridge Flight drops away from Cambrian Wharf .
The dominant feature is Birmingham's BT Tower, which stands beside the canal. The con-
crete legs of the accompanying tower block stand in a lockside pond and all around the lock.
It is a curious juxtaposition - the intricate detail of the locks contrasts with the grey slabs of
concrete, the former well worn and mellow, the latter becoming chipped by passing boats.
In contrast, the huge brick cavern under Snow Hill station stands stark and empty but for
some decorative ironwork. At one time the canal was heavily lined with dark brick walls,
hemming it in and giving it the local name of the Bottom Road. These walls are now going,
opening the towpath up as a pleasant place to walk.
Beyond the Aston Expressway and Corporation Street, Aston Junction allows the Digbeth
Branch to peel off to the right to meet up with the Grand Union Canal. Aston Junction has
been renovated in the best canal tradition. The flight is not without its interesting features,
too, such as a recessed alcove in the brickwork of one bridge, the radius just large enough to
take a lock balance beam and the height just enough for an adult to be able to stand.
Approaching Gravelly Hill Interchange of the M6, plant life begins to increase. The most
common plant encountered is purple lupin, which adds a welcome splash of colour. Black-
berry and elder bushes and reeds also help to bring the canal to life. Lupins have a foothold
