The Birmingham & Fazeley Canal was designed as a connector linking a number of other
canals. It leaves the New Main Line of the Birmingham Canal Navigations at Old Turn Junc-
tion. This was one of the most overcrowded points on the industrial canal network and, for
this reason, lights were soon installed on the Farmer's Bridge lock flight, which went over to
24-hour working, rare in Britain.
The canal immediately passes Cambrian Wharf, a set of 18th century cottages and a toll of-
fice. The Flapper replaces former wharves and has one of the two wharf cranes incorporated
into its outside seating area. Behind the Flapper is the 2013 Library of Birmingham.
Bridges in Birmingham generally have red doors in parapets to allow firemen to drop hoses
through to the water source. This idea has been mirrored on a couple of recent bridges with
railings, the railings having opening panels also painted red.
The Farmer's Bridge Flight, the Birmingham 13, is of interest to anyone with a liking for
industrial and canal architecture. The top lock is one of a couple with tow rope guide pins. The
brick towpath is ribbed to allow horses to grip.
