In-Depth Information
At Ratho, the Bridge Inn has its own restaurant barge, the Pride of the Union . For years
this inn was managed by Ronnie Rusack, a prime mover in the restoration of the canal and a
promoter of the Seagull Trust.
A 5km lade, the canal's main feeder, complete with tunnels, arrives next to the five seg-
mental arches of stone faced with rock of the 128m long Almond Aqueduct. This carries the
canal 23m above the River Almond, on the bank of which is a dinosaur footprint. From here
the views are excellent, the Forth road and rail bridges being visible down the valley. Near-
er are the 32 arches of the 3km long Almond Valley railway viaduct in two sections on the
Waverley to Queen Street line.
