From Broxburn, red shale bings are frequent, scheduled monuments resulting from oil
shale extraction for paraffin manufacture in Broxburn. At Niddry, the canal turns back to the
north-west and the restored block of Niddry Castle squats at the foot of another heap of waste,
the castle having sheltered Mary, Queen of Scots before her final capture.
The Linlithgow canal basin is a delightful spot in a setting of low canal buildings with
former stables, multi-level bridges and Linlithgow Canal Centre museum with canal and Ro-
man remains. It is also the home of the Victoria , a diesel-driven replica of a steam packet.
