On the south side is Clarence Dock, also known as Tatie Basin from its handling of Jersey
potato traffic. Overlooking both the dock and Leeds Lock is the Royal Armouries Museum,
Britain's largest post-war museum, which was moved from the Tower of London. It has the
world's best collection of armaments, guns and armour, even elephant armour. Demonstra-
tions include jousting, falconry and Wild West gunfights.
A steam derrick crane draws attention to Thwaite Mills Industrial Museum. There was a
fulling mill here between the navigation and river. It had four wheels from 1641 and was
bought by the Aire & Calder Navigation Company to safeguard their water supplies. The
current seed, flint and chalk crushing mill of 1823, one of the last remaining water powered
mills, was also used for preparing putty, pottery, bread and medicines at various times and
had china clay delivered direct from Fowey.
Rising land to the south hides Rothwell and the former mining village of John O'Gaunts
although spoil tips can only be landscaped so far. To the north is Temple Newsam Country
Park, one of the largest floral parks and working rare-breeds farms in Europe, 5km 2 having
