been laid out in the 1760s by Capability Brown around a Tudor/Jacobean red-brick mansion
of c1500. Described as the Hampton Court of the north, it was the birthplace of Lord Darnley
and owned by the Knights Templar in the 12-14th centuries. Lakes and country park have
been established on opencast workings.
The Royal Armouries Museum overlooks Leeds Lock .
