Watford Flight tranquillity beside the M1 .
A brick church of 1834 with a 13th century stone tower by the canal gives notice of arrival
at Newton Harcourt, with its three locks, Wain Bridge, ridge and furrow system and dis-
plays of dog roses. This quiet spot was the scene of rioting led by militant navvies during the
canal's construction in 1795, resulting in the cavalry being called in to restore order.
The descent continues past Kilby Bridge, Double Rail and Irving's Locks to South Wig-
ston, where the character of the canal changes. After a mostly rural run all the way from the
main line near Daventry, the canal now comes within reach of increasingly urban areas.
