Bellagio
It's impossible not to be charmed by Bellagio's water-
front of bobbing boats, maze of steep stone stair-
cases, dark cypress groves and showy rhododendron-
filled gardens. Its peerless position on the promon-
tory jutting out into the centre of the lake made it the
object of much squabbling between Milan and Como,
hence its ruined fortifications and Como-esque
church of San Giovanni, built by Como masters
between 1075 and 1125. Although it teems with visitors in summer, if you turn up
out of season you'll have the place almost to yourself.
